No less than 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Security Action on Gangs
At least 64 people died in a police operation targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. Over 80 individuals were arrested.
Fierce clashes erupted when around 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.
The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements near Rio's airport is regarded as the headquarters of a major illegal networks.
Government representatives stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Locals have described the hillside area - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
